Reflection:
Cyber bullying can turn deadly as the Internet is an always-on playground or schoolyard harassment. The rise in cyber bullying is a worrying fact many parents and Internet users feared, for online bullying can cause devastating effects that may result in depression and even death. With one-third of the targets being teenagers and children, it is a very serious matter that all of us, including parents or Internet users should think up solutions and solve this rising problem. Having read this article, I felt that there are two main reasons that led to the rise of online bullying.
Firstly, in this fast paced and modern world, many people are having stress problems and they do not know how to cope with it. For example, students, they have tests and examinations and co-curriculum activities in school to handle with. And maybe at home they may have tuition and extra lessons on other aspects such as art and music. For adults, they have their own career to fight for so they will have stress too, with personal and family matters to take care of. But unfortunately many people have no way of handling with stress. They found that the ‘only’ way to distress is to bully others online so that they could forget about their problems at that short period of time while giving others problems, disturbing them. They might have found it quite ‘effective’, thus they will continue bullying the targets that they had found earlier. But they did not care or think about the victims’ feeling about the insults (mostly) they had made before. Others Internet users might also join in the bullying feeling that it was fun. They might think it was a joke that they had made but not knowing that the victim would be emotionally hurt and think that it will simmer down after some time. But that not true, for the bullying will continue up to a few months or even years.
Secondly, the cyber net is always on, 24/7, 365 days a year. The Internet does not need face-to-face contact thus the bully can be anonymous without the need of revealing his identity. The lack of face-to-face contact might tempt the bully to higher levels of cruelty than ‘face-to-face’ bully. On the playground, seeing the stress and pain of the victim face to face might ‘stop’ the bullying to an extent. But in the cyberspace, there is no visual contact, thus there will be more extreme bullying. This might explain the rise of cyber bullying. And also, some victims that get bullied in a visual contact might be very angry with themselves being ‘weak’. Therefore they want to be ‘strong’ and become a cyber bully. So, as a result, this bully might continue to bully online targets when he/she got bullied.
With cyber bullying rising, there are some ways that we should implement some ways to solve this problem. Singapore had been looking into this problem some time ago. The news had broadcast about it and gives viewers especially parents to look out for their children actions seeing if they are depress, upset after using the computer, grades declining and emotional. They could have a talk with their children and give suggestions on handling such problems. Schools also need give talks about cyber bullying telling the students that if they encountered such harassment, they should approach their parents, the teachers or the school counselor. Students could be taught how to handle such problems so that they will not get very badly affected after meeting cyber bullying.

Of course the best way or first line of defense is not to use the Internet. But that is definitely impossible for the currently always- on generation. Precaution should be taken to avoid such bullying. Mental wounds are more complicated/difficult to heal than physical wounds. But the best is not to get any ‘wounds’ and I hope that bullying will stop for both face to face and cyber bullying.
